If Social Media is DEAD …

Posted by rexdixon on December 30, 2006

Then I have wasted the past quarter of this year trying to build up my blog readers. I have wasted my time trying to build an audience. IF social media is dead, then why are there over 55 million blogs (according to Technorati at least)? IF social media is dead, how come John Edwards and his campaign team asked bloggers to join them on the road? Do you think John Edwards would have wasted his time by inviting Robert Scoble to join his team on the road IF social media is dead?

I believe that social media is growing, and will continue to do so. I also believe that being tagged in the first round for my opinion of the 2007 crystal ball show proves that I haven’t wasted my time. I also believe that being selected as one of the 32 bloggers to be included in BloggerMania I, even though a bit funny when I first saw it, proves that I haven’t been wasting my time.

Truthfully, the first time I blogged (and that blog is still around) was back in 2003. It’s my personal blog that I don’t advertise outside of friends and family. IF social media is dead, then how come other bloggers have come along since I launched my blog in 2003 and smoked right past me? They took the flame and ran with it. I thought at the time, “Okay, blogs are cool, but what can come of it; I’m looking for an IT gig?”

I was wrong back then, and I will have to say – social media is alive and well at the end of 2006. It will be just as strong and growing in 2007. Technically Speaking, I think the original article was written so that we social media types would have something to write about today and over the long holiday weekend. 🙂

Bloggers on the road with John Edwards

Posted by rexdixon on December 29, 2006

Scobleizer brings up a valid point in his latest entry from Reno; on the road with John Edwards. How will the average every day blogger, such as Rex Dixon be able to under take a week long or more trek with John Edwards and crew? It is a question of ethics and as Robert suggested, perhaps some sort of blogger fund needs to be established.

To be a blogger or reporter you have to watch the fund line. Full disclosure. Kind of reminds me of the whole Ferrari incident. Enough of that though. I think we all have read enough on that for now.

Going on the road with John Edwards and watching the political process and reporting back to the web daily is something that should be the way this election in 2008 is covered. While the mainstream media is catching up, the bloggers, vloggers, podcasters, and other internet media types have know all along how to effectively get the word out there. It is the power of the people that should decide things. To do that, and to also have an unbiased by any monetary consideration view of the events that transpire around you, the blogger must some how be self funded. It is either self funded or have a blogger fund so that all costs associated with the undertaking will be covered adequately.

Technically Speaking, I can bet Robert Scoble along with the other bloggers out there now are having the experience of a lifetime.

YouTube To Throw Kicking Online New Year’s Party

Posted by rexdixon on December 29, 2006

Forget about the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Dick Clark, er, Ryan Seacrest. The new generation will be on YouTube. YouTube wants everyone to get in on the New Year’s Eve celebration or

New YouTube Way

of bringing in the new year 2007.  Could this be the start of something new and big? I am hearing all sorts of new 2007 things lately; along with my own predictions, I think this is finally ushering in the 21st Century. Yes, it just so happens to be 7 years late, but still the same, with John Edwards harnessing the internet for the election in 2008 and now this latest tidbit. YouTube rings in the new year 2007 online.

Technically Speaking, I probably will be conversing with real people, drinking real alcoholic beverages, and playing cards (real game; not the video game type). The only time I will be near a computer is to post the cut over message (blog post) that will officially signal the beginning of the new domain. That will be shortly after midnight, central time of course. 🙂

Here is some nice backstage conversation in Iowa with the bloggers that are on the road with John Edwards. The video is not too shabby. There is no mainstream press. As noted on Scobleizer’s blog post, this would have not been recorded in 1992. Great stuff, and we are still like 2 years out before the election.

In my 2007 predictions earlier today, my #8 addresses the importance of candidates who capture the internet and utilize it to the fullest. I truly believe that John Edwards is doing the right thing. Some may call it the “YouTube” campaign, but I stand by what I said last night – it’s the SMART Campaign.

Technically Speaking, I’m out of here for a few hours!

New Orleans 5am

Posted by rexdixon on December 28, 2006

Looks like Robert Scoble is living like Rex Dixon; at least the 5am thing today! I hope he was in bed before 1:30am though. He has a nice complete report right from where it’s all going down as far as the John Edwards campaign goes.

Technically Speaking, I’d love to be right there with him. Taking the blog on the road or in Scobleizer’s case the video show on the road has to be an experience you will never forget. You know, I don’t own a video camera but wouldn’t mind getting some face time live and worldwide. )

Robert Scoble on the campaign trail

Posted by rexdixon on December 28, 2006

It appears that Robert Scoble is on the John Edwards for President campaign trail. The news is full of the announcement, and it appears that John Edwards is about to harness the power of the internet, media, marketing and a campaign that is deserving of 21st century proportions. Some sites are questioning ethics, but at least Scobleizer has come clean.

I applaud him for understanding where the future is, and we now will have to wait and see how he harnesses the bloggers that are out there. John if you are reading or having your staff read the blogosphere this evening – I do this thing called 5 questions with Rex Dixon here on this blog. Mostly tech people, but for you I’ll make an exception. NewTeeVee describes it as the “YouTube Candidacy“. Rex Dixon says it’s “The Smart Candidacy“.

Technically Speaking, if John Edwards or any candidate from any party would like to do the 5 question thing with Rex Dixon, just ask me. How do you do that? Well, go listen to one of my podcasts, the e-mail contact is at the end of any of them. Or, you can always hit me up on the chat. My resolution for 2007 is to be on the chat thing more, or at least when I’m online!
