Interview with Kaitlyn McLachlan, Founder of AskItOnline

Posted by rexdixon on November 29, 2006

askitonlineI just posted the article about the startup survey company called AskItOnline here the other day. Today we catch up with the company’s founder Kaitlyn McLachlan, and she sits in for 5 quick hit questions with Rex Dixon. Oh, and don’t worry Kaitlyn, the link’s all WORK this time. 😉

Q1: What is your vision behind askitonline and when did you start making the plans to bring it online?

I often wanted to gather information for various projects through a survey, but creating a survey seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. I found some services online that help you create surveys, such as SurveyMonkey.

I signed up for an account, and that was truly more trouble than it was worth. I can’t understand how much of their users could even use the interface. It’s very technical and difficult to work with unless you’ve done it many times before.

So, being a programmer, I decided to fix things on my own — and so AskItOnline came to life. I’ve been working on it for months and keeping it very quiet and only launched it into a private beta last week. Along with the beta testers, I’ve been adding and improving features on a daily basis and I do expect that AskItOnline will be able to enter a public beta in the very near future.

Q2: What industry do you think, or have you seen utilize your site the most so far?

I am confident that AskItOnline will appeal and work well for everyone from the small, simple user to large corporations requiring advanced functions, security, and analysis at their fingertips.

Q3: What do you believe is the biggest thing that askitonline has market advantage speaking over the other survey sites that are out there today?

Our biggest advantage is that we’ve brought online survey tools to the “web 2.0” age. Rather than trying to remember the format you need to enter questions, waiting for slow page reloads, etc. you can utilize a drag ‘n’ drop interface as the survey editor. With the use of AJAX, less data needs to be sent back and forth resulting in a much faster process. The GUI interface makes it super easy for users of all computer experience to create surveys.

Q4: Give us some company specifications that you can share with our readers. ie.. company size, VC funding, management structure, etc… anything that you would like our readers to know about your company.

Triexa is the company behind AskItOnline. Triexa is primarily a web design and software development company based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Kaitlyn McLachlan is actually the only person working on AskItOnline at the moment. She is the founder, designer, programmer, and more – along with help from beta testers and other users.

Q5: Do you have any final thoughts for the readers, or more like a final pitch as to “why” someone should use askitonline over another survey site?

AskItOnline is extremely easy to use, and will work just fine whether you prefer Internet Explorer, Firefox, or some other browser. While constantly being improved, the survey editor is top-notch and allows you to create a survey in minutes which may have previously taken you hours.

  1. RD,
I think there is something here, but you are short about 15 questions to get what ‘askitonline’ can do broken down. I have a love hate relationships with surveys, but I also know how valuable they can be if they are used…that is part of the many questions I have for Kaitlyn (which I love the way she spells her name).

The big question here…once you take the time to set up an askitonline account and learn to create a survey, where does it go? On your web-site? Out in emails I send?, Out in emails asitonline sends? All of the above? or is it just a trophy I would keep on accomplishing the feat of creating a survey?

AskItOnline currently sets up a front-end for users to take a survey. For example, here is one of mine: (always changing, so may look stupid or not act right).

That survey is automatically generated and based on the “Default” theme.

We also intend to allow you to send out “invitations” to people for your survey. You can also fetch the web page and display it on your page through JavaScript, or embed it with something like an IFRAME.
