Google passes Yahoo

Posted by rexdixon on December 23, 2006

Yahoo is just having a heck of the end of they year! First they are passed up by MySpace and now they are what – 3rd place? Who would have thought that Yahoo would be one day pushed to third place. Very interesting, but 2007 should bring some more interesting web developments. You can count on it. Google passed Yahoo, MySpace passed Yahoo, and soon Google and MySpace will be passed by ?

To Answer This Question

Posted by rexdixon on December 16, 2006

What Kind of Publisher Are You?” – I am a blogger. I am a podcaster. The two makes me a BlogCaster. That is the kind of publisher Rex Dixon happens to be. Blogging and pocasting along with Vlogging or Vcasting or Video Bloggers are the new media.

Traditional newspapers such as the NY Times has finally realized that you can’t fight the new way of getting the news out there. There is not a way to get around it. If you can’t publish in real time, you will be brushed aside. Even though I do not believe Facebook is worth the $8 Billion that they want, I do believe that the future is the youth. That is why Yahoo valued them so high.

To make the most of your media today, you have to be online. The traditional paper news just doesn’t cut it. Oh, I love the fact of pulling out the Sunday comics still from time to time, or more like reading all the ads for new technology gadget and computer sales. I can’t deny that there is nothing more interesting still to look in awe at stuff you can’t afford or really need. Yes, you can do that online, but there still is that nice feeling of getting news print ink on your hands and smell of a newspaper.

With all that sentiment aside, you can’t deny the facts at hand. Google, Yahoo, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube are all on the tips of the tongue of any internet user. The world wide web is truly world wide with such incentives as the $150 laptops for 3rd world countries. Most of those are going to kids in schools. Again, you now have a whole generation world wide that is coming up on the internet. Growing up on the internet is a better term.

To ignore that audience with traditional media would be the biggest mistake you could make if you are in the media business today. Technically Speaking, there has to be a balance of the two, as the traditional media is still utilizied. The two can work together, but the new media that is here today and here to stay can not be ignored.

AOL what is left?

Posted by rexdixon on December 15, 2006

Well the news is hitting right now (breaking story below link)now that more people on the executive level are leaving or getting tossed aside. The AOL PR machine is not commenting. What is left? AOL is basically dead in the water and that is literally speaking.

The leadership is jumping off or getting thrown off. The people (workers) are getting laid off. So is there any reason for AOL to exist in it’s current state? Who is left running the show?

Technically Speaking, I guess someone will flip the light switch and the computers will take over at some point. Seriously, AOL needs to be bought out and absorbed into a bigger company. Which one do you think will buy the remains? Yahoo or Google or Microsoft? Do you think there is another player that could snap up this dead beast and revive it? Maybe a VC?

Yahoo to outperform Google in 2007?

Posted by rexdixon on December 14, 2006

Wow. I just read this. This guy was on CNBC saying this? I could say some really short things here, but I think that I want to expand a bit on this.

How does this guy come up with this? I mean, looking at raw numbers, Yahoo can’t even beat MySpace right now. Where does he think that Yahoo will make a turnaround in 2007? I mean, this is as close to 2007 as you can get.

Right now, Yahoo is not doing well. There is corporate shuffling, rumors, and of course “the peanut butter” fiasco memo. I mean, does the guy really believe in himself, or is he someone that thinks he can predict the stock market?

Google is selling at what? $500 plus or minus right now? What is Yahoo selling at today? Does anyone care? Technically Speaking, if this happens, someone remind me in 2007 to make a formal apology online here in the blog.

Panama by Yahoo

Posted by rexdixon on December 13, 2006

I am such a geek. When I say “Panama” I still picture and hear the song by Van Halen; the “real” Van Halen with DLR of course.

Now what Yahoo has cooking could be very well the dawn of a new statistics age for the internet. Something that Rex Dixon has been stating all the time – better statistics. Here is an excerpt from their press release:

Yahoo!’s new search marketing platform now provides a streamlined, user-friendly sign-up process that allows businesses to create a sponsored search account in five easy steps. Once in, advertisers can quickly create campaigns, determine their desired position, understand their potential share of available clicks, set their budgets, and then see their ads online within minutes. In addition, Yahoo!’s new ad testing and optimization features allow advertisers to easily test their creative options and manage their campaigns to the goals they have for return on investment.

Yahoo dethroned?

Posted by rexdixon on December 13, 2006

I finally looked at the actual numbers, and yes MySpace did pass Yahoo. But a dethroning? MySpace did contribute to the main numbers for Fox Interactive Media. But a dethroning? The funny thing is, I haven’t checked my MySpace account for like a week now.

Why? Because, if the site is going to keep up, you need to fix MySpace. Plain and simple the network infrastructure sucks. Bottom line, the last time I was on MySpace it was not a fun experience. It was slow, like I was on a dial up connection again. I couldn’t reply to messages without getting an error message. It took me 20 minutes of my time to respond to a few messages from my friends there. Stupid. Waste of my time!
I’ve said it, others have said it, and still MySpace passes Yahoo. For this month at least. To me, 39.5 and 38 million is not a “dethroning”. It’s a temporary change for the month. MySpace really wants to stay on top?

Take all the money that Fox Interactive has, and get some people to — what is it? — FIX the network infrastructure!!! Geesh, does Rex Dixon need to go to MySpace and become CTO and whip some of you into shape?!?

MySpace Bigger Then Yahoo

Posted by rexdixon on December 12, 2006

The 3 count has been done. MySpace has been declared the official winner. MySpace beat or edged Yahoo in the Comscore stats. See them all at the above link, but keep reading as I’m sure there is more interesting news then stats right now. I for one am always talking about them (stats), but hey – there is a ton of good items to talk about.

Technically Speaking, NEXT! ;)

Project Fraternity

Posted by rexdixon on December 12, 2006

Well I guess the open toed sandals didn’t fair too well. Dork! Facebook could have had $1.62 billion. Patience is a virtue man. Age and experience is something you learn to respect. Your rush to be Mr. Avante Garde just showed how really inexperienced you are as far as real social interaction goes.

What am I rambling about? The of course Yahoo leaked document called “Project Fraternity“.

Technically Speaking, Mr. Open Toed Sandals really blew this one for Facebook. Keep wearing them to meetings man, you will look great and have the real players laugh at you behind your back. Dork!

Google Fixes page

Posted by rexdixon on December 12, 2006

I am glad that Google has fixed the page. I’m also glad to be misunderstood by Robert Scoble.  What I was hoping that the readers gathered was what Google did is not a crime. It’s done on the internet all the time. The issue that everyone (including myself) had is Google trying to pass off their work as an original piece of work (the ad).

Borrowing content, linking to sites, quoting text, giving CREDIT where CREDIT is due – it’s done all the time.  I always make sure I link to the original article when I write. I always make sure the credit is given. Blatent stealing of content without giving credit is a big “no, no” anywhere. That goes for on the internet or even if you are writing a paper. You must credit. Period.

Do you think people would have had such an issue if Google had put somewhere on the ad, this ad “credited to Yahoo“? Of course not. But would it also still be the talk of the internet today? Maybe.

Do you think Google would have received as much blog press if they would have not slapped up the original ad? I am sure they would have never done that “credit this one to Yahoo” thing. It was only an example!! Keep reading, for the people who think I’m incoherently speaking, I have to give you pointers to the food here.

Ah, eureka, what could be a press nightmare is maybe really what they call in the con game – hook ‘em, reel ‘em and bring them in before they know they have been caught. It’s what you do to fish. I think we “fish” were all probably were just caught up in an elaborate smoke and mirrors game. There are those of you who think Google was not being smart on this one.  I saw a reference to that effect as in “they have all these Phd.’s etc“. (think it was on the Scobleizer comment trail above)…

Think again. Technically Speaking, we (the blogs) all gave them free press coverage, free advertisement and the news spread quicker then any PR thing they could have done on this. You think they aren’t smart? I think one of those PhD’s that works at Google has his doctorate in the world of 3 card monte. :)
