Web 2.0 Summit

Posted by rexdixon on November 7, 2006

Web 2.0 LogoWeb 2.0 Summit kicked off today in San Francisco. Here is a great run down of all the new companies. Technically Speaking it would have been more rocking if Rex Dixon would have been given an all access pass to the event along with first class airline tickets from St. Louis. We must not of course forget the first class hotel suite overlooking the city, as well as all meals and drinks paid for.

New Online Ad Techniques

Posted by rexdixon on November 7, 2006

When I first saw this, it was like deja vu or something. Wasn’t it only a few weeks ago that Scot Duke and I did a Coffee with Rex Dixon show, or was it two?

NOW I have figured out who is sneaking a listen to the shows! It’s quite obvious, as this is the second time I have seen a direct reference from either show - Coffee with Rex Dixon or the Happy Hour with Mr. Business Golf show.

Technically Speaking, I am glad that you are listening to the shows, but hey — how about a plug every now and again? How about a “Technically Speaking the idea came to us as we were listening to the Coffee show or the Happy Hour show.”

Behavioral targeting, along with massive data collection, user tracking and audience profiling allows marketers to more accurately match advertising with users. When users visit a site, they are assigned a non-personally identifying number.

IBM going to watch the border

Posted by rexdixon on November 7, 2006

Big Blue just announced today that it’s begun IBM logoselling the “Smart Surveillance System,” or S3. According to Reuters, the new system is able to record video feeds and the analyze the information gathered, sounding an alarm when it “identifies suspicious activity.” CNET also reports that IBM is in talks with the federal government to put an S3 along the US-Mexico border. According to IBM, the Feds are “doing backflips” every time they see the S3, which apparently can index and search videos based on specific objects and/or actions.

End Around Hack via IE — get on another browser!!

Posted by rexdixon on November 7, 2006

The dependence of Internet Explorer on other Windows components has allowed online attackers to work around the shored-up security of Microsoft’s latest browser.

Technically Speaking, that is one of the main things I do not like about Windows; how everything is dependent on each other.

Zevents gets $7 million

Posted by rexdixon on November 7, 2006

That is a very large sum of money, and it raises questions about the company’s business model. Such a large round makes it more difficult for Zvents to return a profit to investors. This suggests Zvents is swinging for the fences — it will have to become all pervasive.

Technically Speaking, Rex Dixon see this as a VERY large sum of money, and again – people (namely the VC firms) really need to listen to a podcast that Scot Duke, the writer of – How To Play Business Golf, and Rex Dixon did a week or so ago. He and I had a nice discussion, and truthfully, it’s time to wake up and smell the COFFEE!

I know that some of you VC firms may think it’s a joke, but just ask some of the so called record company executives from the dot rock explosion. I can bet you each and everyone would  wished they would have had perfect 20/20 hindsight vision back then!

Scot knows operations (30 plus years at SBC – ie — a REAL company) and should be hired to help oversee your money that you fund to new start ups as a COO.
