Zimbra, Universal Music sues, Intel drops, 7 Minutes with Rex Dixon - after show notes!

Posted by rexdixon on October 17, 2006

Zimbra. Why do all of these types of companies (at least lately) like to start with a “Z”? I think it’s cool, but why? I like this type of software, but right now, I like ZohoX.

Universal Music is now officially part of GoogleTube! suing Grouper and bolt.com. Should be a fun holiday season into the new year for all involved. Grouper was that site that Sony bought for a bargin price. I talked about them early this week in reference to the above article on TechCrunch of course. In anycase, more details are here.

Intel had a 35% drop in income in the 3rd quarter. Regular workers are still awaiting their 3rd quarter bonus checks. Intel’s CEO said it was a “very good quarter“. Regular workers are still awaiting their 3rd quarter bonus checks.

Today’s show - 7 Minutes with Rex Dixon is now online. Here is a rundown of today’s show:

* Grade “C” software
* The Screwdriver Corporation - Charlotte, NC
* Screwdriver Antenna - Springfield, MO

There is quite a difference between “.net” and “.com” as seen in the above two examples; talked about them both on today’s show - 7 Minutes with Rex Dixon

There will be more new items around 6am’ish in the morning; these tech types are ruthless - I’m glad I’m not a CEO of a new startup — I’d hate to get that phone call at 1 or 2am from Mike, Om, Liz, or anyone from these sites trying to get the latest news! Technically Speaking, Rex Dixon is like a 20 hour a day man, and I need my 4 hours of sleep!

Yahoo’s profit falls 37.25%, Yahoo and rightmedia do business!

Posted by rexdixon on October 17, 2006

Yahoo said its net profit fell 37.25 percent to $159 million ($0.11 per diluted share) in the third quarter and total operating expenses rose 32.61 percent.

In related news - Yahoo and rightmedia are doing some bang up biz-ness! Sounds like something else I read today about smoke and mirrors tactic’s being employed.

Yahoo just needs to snatch up Revver. Technically Speaking, I’ve been saying this now for a few weeks!

Mobile Linux and Investors, Microsoft goes Open Source!

Posted by rexdixon on October 17, 2006

Investors are now seeing money in Linux on the cell phone. It appears that VC firm Garnett & Helfrich Capital said it is buying Linux mobile software company Celunite. Linux has always been a better OS in Rex Dixon’s opinion at least. I can see Linux working well on allot of mobile devices, and for those type of code writers, it looks like business is going to be very good in the near future.

Microsoft goes Open Source. Unbelievable, right? Well on a new project they are working on called VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) Image Format specifications.

Technically Speaking, all good news on that post!

Level3 buys Broadwing for $1.4 Billion

Posted by rexdixon on October 17, 2006

Level3 just completed the deal today to buy Broadwing. This leaves only a few major players on the field. I wonder if my old friend Earl ran back to Level 3 to get a cool job again? Technically Speaking, it’s a strong field that is left!

GridServer, EMC profits down 33%-layoffs coming!

Posted by rexdixon on October 17, 2006

GridServer is a new and very reasonable priced hosting service via Media Temple. $20 a month will get you - 100 gb of storage, 1 tb of bandwidth, and up to 100 individual sites. Now that is a killer deal!

EMC looks like it will be laying off people starting today. The President and CEO Joe Tucci does not want to go into great detail, as most of the people are just finding out this morning.

Technically Speaking, that is good news and bad news.

Free.fr, ATT-BellSouth update, Firefox 2.0, PayPal Mafia, PopSugar, Data In A Box

Posted by rexdixon on October 17, 2006

Free - yes, that is what France is. Where is the innnovation pioneers here in America? No, I’m not talking about the $1.65 billion type, but the true innovators and thinkers that make France a better place to be right now for internet access?

It looks like ATT is going to have to concede some things in order to get this deal done with BellSouth. I hope that they resolve this issue this week. We may as well quit hanging on to the pipe dream of “last mile” and “no monopolies”. Just get it over with, do the deal. Everyone in on it from the FCC down to the guy driving the BellSouth truck stands to benefit.

FireFox 2.0 release candidate 3 is going to ship this evening! That’s good to hear. Rex Dixon likes FireFox!

Move over Tony Soprano, here comes the PayPal Mafia!

PopSugar. That sounds like something out of an Archie comicbook. Looks like Sequoia Capital as Michael Moritz will join the sugar team. It’s not just your mom and dad’s popsugar, it’s PopSugar!

Rex Dixon in a past life built these Data In A Box things. Well an item very very similiar to this. I’m sure they are modeled after the Marine Corps project that I worked on; like over 13 years ago. I believe the Marine’s paid allot for them too. They are a cool concept, but I just wonder where these boxes will be deployed too?

Technically Speaking, have to run!
